Lost in Our Sonoran Desert
During my final year studying Visual Communication Design at Arizona State University, I focused a few different projects on a social issue I felt needed more advocating. After extensive research, I worked on a series of projects that visualized my chosen social issue. These projects served to both bring awareness and to challenge me to visually communicate important data by _ story telling.
As a first generation immigrant who has ties to the desert, when I began to learn about migrant patterns in an Intro to US Migration Studies course, I was very intrigued. It was distressing to discover that thousands migrants have and continue to die in the Sonoran Desert while attempting to travel to the United States. At the time of my research, I found that from 1999 to 2018, 3,496 migrants have lost their lives in the Pima County in Arizona alone. This was the social issue that I decided would be the topic of my projects.
